Seven Steps For Student Success
Seven steps to student success that a tutor can include to positively impact their student.
Step 1: Rapport - from the very first hello in class, bring a smile and a conversational welcome to the classroom. Ask your student their name and a couple of questions about their day or interests.
Step 2: Goals - share the goals and what you will be working on during the lesson to help your student frame their expectations.
Step 3: Guide - a tutor who guides the student to complete the work, understand the correction, and discover the answer on their own, will find their students stay engaged and retain more when they meet again in a future session. Seek an equal amount of student and tutor speaking time in each session.
Step 4: Adjust - you may choose to use examples to build student understanding that are focused on the hobbies and interests of the student. This is also an effective way for a student to visualize the question as they consider the answer.
Step 5: Extend - Go beyond the content by asking students if they can provide an example, or describe how the story is similar to something in their day. Conversation related to the content can help students further understand and retain the information.
Step 6: Celebrate! Everyone enjoys receiving praise, and when a student is working diligently for their tutor it's important to praise their efforts. Let your student know what they did well such as, “You sounded out that word very well!” or “I like that you showed your steps on the whiteboard.”
Step 7: Summarize what the student practiced and achieved at the end of the session.
These seven steps, combined with a cheerful, “See you next time”, help develop a foundation for successful tutoring sessions at Littera.
